Photographer | Film maker | Artist
Bio
I am a photographer of portraits, documentary and band concepts. I have also exhibited in many galleries culminating in a one man exhibition at The Williamson Art gallery in 2012.
I have been a photographer for the past 30 years, before that a painter (exhibiting in a group show, at the Royal Academy when I was 11).
I won The Kriterion Award in 2012 (public vote – best work in show)
More recently I have branched out into film by making a series on environmental awareness for my local council, Wirral.
Art Statement
Matthew Thomas (°1963, London, United Kingdom) is an artist who mainly works with photography. By choosing mainly formal solutions, Thomas creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.
His photos are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By applying abstraction, he tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.
His works directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. With a conceptual approach, he tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.
